ABOUT THE ALBUM
R.I.P. is the debut album released by the Swiss thrash metal band Coroner (1987). This album marks the first chapter of the band’s progression and is characterized by raw speed and power (save for the instrumentals), very typical of thrash metal at this time. Formed in 1983, Coroner’s music combines elements of thrash, classical music, avant-garde music, progressive rock, and jazz with suitably gruff vocals. With their increasingly complex style of progressive rock-infused thrash, they have been called “the Rush of thrash metal.” Coroner’s sound then progressed and the production became more refined, resulting in more progressive albums. Swiss thrashers Coroner have unleashed a delectable debut withR.I.P.This is the band at their rawest, though definitively technical. Teutonic (German-speaking) thrash bands such as Destruction, Kreator, Celtic Frost, and Sodom were pivotal to the scene. Now enter Coroner, comprised of prior Celtic Frost roadies. This three piece were mind-altering amazing from the starting gate right up to their last release, never even close to having a skip track. The magic of Coroner consists of Tommy T. Baron, a masterful guitar shredder, Marquis Marky, an extraordinarily fluid drummer, and the solid bassist/vocalist Ron Royce. Royces guttural voice embraces metal like an aged whiskey complements a fine cigar. This IS one helluva band.
The ambiesque intro toReborn Through Hatecould not have been more appropriate. The song itself is pure unadulterated thrash, dark and beaconing. Unfortunately, the drums get buried behind the wall of sound, an issue which is remedied in later releases.When Angels Dieis a sleeper, addressing the horrors of nuclear holocaust. Amigos, this aint Barry Manilow this is mid-80s European thrash, suck it up!
One of the more ballsy technical cuts is the instrumentalNosferatu. Its whiplash-induced neo-classical speed in all its majesty. Next is the crazy-ferociousSuicide Command, which features blistering bass/drums locked in tight. ThenSpiral Dreamis an intricate piece most noted for its guitar parts of speed and transcendence.Tolentanzfinishes the album in Spanish guitar, followed up with full-throttle heart-pounding metallic riffs.
The playing onR.I.P.is extremely robust and engaging. In spite of the sub-par production of Harris Johns (Grave Digger, Helloween), the album is completely captivating I mean, if one is going to have a career in technical thrash, this is how its done.R.I.P.is brilliance in its song compositions.

The third album,Punishment For Decadence,by Switzerland’s Coroner is arguably the band’s peak in song writing and technicality, which doesn’t prevent it from having classic hardcore punk inspired fast snare beats, as in the opening track, one of the best on this almost flawless album. It is a maze of riffs and beats without losing its aggressiveness, it is as ifRust In PeaceeraMegadethdecided to get even more technical and lyrically more in tune with their first album. For those who wish Megadeth could’ve offered a much tidier and technical discography, doing something that was logical as a follow-up toRust In Peace, Coroner is the band you need check out, as the band is one of the few thrash bands always seen referred to as asTech-Thrash. The drumming is head spinning, the guitar and bass are extremely intricate but without getting into a masturbatory celebration of their skills, like what Dream Theatre did to a lot of 90’s “metalheads” who were only into the music because it was 10 min solos and no sense of songwriting, Coroner does not do that. There are even choruses you can remember, not normally something “prog metal” bands can claim. The vocalist/bassist is intelligible, elite,and very much in the vein of classic thrash bands likeSlayerandMetallica. The album is filled with absolutely insane timings, tempo changes and dizzying rhythms. Soloing is in the upper tier of thrash soloing too. No More Coloris widely accepted the the epitome of perfectmelodic technical thrash — – from the reunited Swiss trio.Imagineif Rush was heavier and more brutal, yet still painted glorious, swirling melodies, both guitar and bass. It’s akin to a churning maelstrom of subtle, rich brutality; the kind of thing you’d listen to in a stage headed to a certain Count’s castle in the Carpathian Mountains. Cheese grater sharp riffs slicing up and down your back for days, flowing bass lines that at times accentuate both the guitars AND drums, rasped out snarling vocals as opposed to the cookie monster, blink and you’ll lose your place in the lyric sheet rumbled roaring that was so popular in the latter half of the eighties and still reigns today. Lyrics are intelligent; the closing song “T.V. Bizarre: Last Entertainment” even managed to foresee and rag on the senseless wave of reality television that now rules the airwaves. Other incredible tunes are opener “Die By My Hand,” “Why It Hurts” and the incomparable, “Read My Scars.” And, it’s all encased inside a scant but perfect album length – just under 34 minutes.The 2022 Brutal Planet Records remaster comes on a Gold Disc for the first time ever, is packaged in a jewel case, and each CD includes a free Gold-Foil stamped collector card(first pressing only)!

Coroner No More Color (Brutal Planet Records, 2022)
Coroner hit their peak with this third full-length. Like Rush 1974-1981 and Kings X 1988-1992, and so many other elite bands, Coroner are technical thrash perfection from the beginning of their career to their last album in 1993. WithNo More Colorthe drums find the proper mix finally and the choruses are contagiously catchy. This is hands-down my favourite Coroner album. Peter Hinton of Saxon gets recognition for manufacturing a magnificent sound.
Die For Myselfstarts with what any listener will identify as a great improvement in song writing and overall sound dynamics, which continues onto the rest of the album.No Need To Be Humandoes not disappoint, pulling the brakes for a slower entry, then following up with neo-classical guitar.D.O.A.is unadulterated thrash goodness, flying into many directions yet still remaining coherent.
The highlight of this album is found inMistress Of Deception. If you hear only one song from Coroners catalog, let it be this bombastic masterpiece! Another heavy delight isTunnel of Pain, which continues to honor Coroner as true statesmen of thrashdom with compelling and skilled musicianship. Seriously, this is some of the most accomplished metal you are likely to hear in a couple lifetimes.
Ending trackLast Entertainmentthrow in keyboard accents for an experimental metal meets dark wave composition. Ron Royce does spoken word while drummer Marky plays with an echo effect on the drums. As with any band challenged to turn over new ground, this song indicates they are avoiding being pigeon-holed in their musical aspirations.
No More Coloris a prestigious and powerful album, one that will endure the test of time. Now available on Gold Disc CD, this comes highly recommended.
